 About Desiree

My name is Desiree Letendre and I'm a certified birth doula through DONA International, located in Edmonton, AB.  I have spent the better portion of my life fascinated by pregnancy, birth, and babies.  I have a passion for the miracle of birth and feel my purpose in life is to help expectant and new mothers.

I have 3 children of my own, two of which were born via cesarian section.  I strongly believe if I had been better informed of my options and had built a stronger support system then my first two children could have been born without medical intervention.  My third baby, I was much better informed and was able to get my VBAC ... because of this, I have a special place in my heart for VBAC's!

On top of being a certified Birth Doula, I am also a Registered Massage Therapist with the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC).  I have been practicing for 9 years specializing in prenatal massage.  I also offer deep tissue, trigger point, and energy work.  I incorporate my massage experience and my knowledge of the body into my Doula practice by offering prenatal massage and Craniosacral therapy treatments as well as using my massage and Craniosacral techniques during labor.

I have just finished my Craniosacral Therapy 2 and am currently working on my Reiki Level 1 and also incorporate these into my practice.

My Philosophy

  • I believe that the birth of your child is a memory you will hold onto for your entire life.
  • I believe that every woman deserves to experience the birth of her child in an encouraging environment that will leave a positive lasting memory.
  • I trust in the ability of the human body to produce life.  In most situations it's possible to have a natural birth process.
  • I believe every woman has the right to make informed decisions that she feels are in the best interest of her, her child, and those in her circle without the fear of being judged.
  • I understand that labor is unpredictable and things can change quickly but that the labouring woman has the right to be involved in the decision making process when medical intervention needs to take place.
  • I believe that even though your labor and birth may not go as you had originally planned, it can still be a positive experience.

  • I believe that every woman has the right to receive positive, supportive, and predictable care regardless of the outcome of the birth.
  • I promote an atmosphere that is empowering and supportive for both the birthing woman and her partner so that you both can look back on this experience with fondness.
  • I do NOT only support unmedicated labor birth plans.  I support the birth plan that you are most comfortable with and that you choose in in the best interest of you and your child.  Although an unmedicated birth plan is possible for most women, it is not necessarily desired by all women, and sometimes Mother Nature has her own plan!
  • I advocate for a positive birth experience and informed choice.  A positive birth experience varies greatly from one woman to another and as long as she has the necessary information to make an informed decision and is content with her decision, that is what defines a positive birth experience and that is what I support!
